Bossa Quality Checklist: How to Specify Upholstery Fabric and Tufting Yarn

A six-step quality checklist for specifying upholstery fabric and tufting yarn, including sky blue upholstery fabric, gist yarn patterns, and the best yarn for tufting.

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at Bossa, a fabric supplier covering sheets, velvet, denim, linen, and microfiber. 1. Define End-Use Before You Pick a Color

Before requesting samples, ask three questions:

  • Will this fabric face daily contact? If yes, stipulate a commercial abrasion test rather than a residential one.
  • Will it sit near natural light? If so, require a lightfastness test based on AATCC TM 16.3.
  • Will it be tufted, upholstered, or both? That changes the backing specification.

While you're at it, unpack every code on the line item. A request like 'blue bossa eb lead sheet'—where 'blue bossa' is the colorway, 'EB' is a finishing code, and 'lead sheet' is a production spec sheet—needs to be translated into physical requirements before anyone orders fabric. Codes are shorthand. Shorthand is not a spec.

2. Lock Down the Color Standard

Color names are for conversations, not contracts. A sky blue looks different on linen, velvet, and microfiber. Dye lots shift. That's why I ask for a physical swatch approved under a known light source, and if the supplier uses digital color data, I want LAB values included.

I ran a blind test with our team in 2024: same upholstery fabric, three dye lots. 80% of the group identified the middle lot as more professional without knowing which lot was which. The cost difference between the lots was $0.12 per yard. On a 5,000-yard run, that's $600 for measurably better consistency. 3. Inspect the Backing and Construction

Backing matters as much as face yarn. A poor backing creates puckering, seam slippage, and loops that pull out. For tufting, the backing needs enough structure to hold the yarn without tearing during the process.

  • Woven or knit construction
  • Picks or courses per inch
  • Yarn count in the face and backing
  • Backing type and weight

We look at these before we look at aesthetics. If the construction can't support the end-use, the color is irrelevant. The numbers said to go with the lower-cost backing in one of our projects, but my gut said the first sample felt too stiff. I upgraded the backing spec. 4. Pick the Best Yarn for Tufting—Not a Brand, a Spec

The best yarn for tufting isn't one product. It depends on pile height, gauge, backing, machine type, and finishing. I know that's a frustrating answer, but it's true.

For tufting in particular, I check four things:

  1. Fiber composition. Wool, acrylic, cotton, polypropylene, and blends behave differently in the loop and under finish.
  2. Twist. Higher twist usually reduces fuzzing and pilling; too much twist can make loops twist and look inconsistent.
  3. Ply. Two-ply is pretty common; three-ply gives more body, but it changes the gauge calculations.
  4. Thickness or count. The number is worthless without the unit—tex, dtex, or metric count.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some yarn suppliers don't publish twist specs more openly. My best guess is they want to protect proprietary blends. That's fine, but ask for a sample card with documented breakage, elongation, and twist per inch before committing.

Had 2 hours to choose a substitute yarn before a production slot closed last year. Normally I'd compare three options side by side, but there was no time. I picked based on fiber and twist data from a previous order. We got lucky. In hindsight, I should have pushed the queue. Don't make a material decision under that kind of time pressure unless you're prepared to own the result.

5. Turn Pattern References Into Measurable Specs

This is the step people skip. Designers often send a screenshot of a knitted pattern or a reference like 'gist yarn patterns' and assume it translates to tufting. It doesn't, unless you convert the visual into a measurable grid.

The rule: if you can't measure it, you can't approve it.

  • Gauge: stitches or loops per inch
  • Pile height
  • Yarn twist and ply
  • Backing density
  • Color placement by area, not by 'look'

A pattern can be an inspiration, but production needs numbers. Same with a reference like 'blue bossa eb lead sheet': once you translate it into color coordinates, construction, and finishing, it's useful. Until then, it's just an order note.

6. Run a Pre-Production Sample and Sign-Off

  • Don't assume 'same as last time.' Dye lots shift, components change, and suppliers update formulations without telling you.
  • Rush is not a spec. The value of a guaranteed turnaround isn't speed—it's certainty. A rush fee can turn a low quote into a high total cost.
  • Ask about aftercare. Upholstery gets cleaned. If the yarn bleeds, that's a quality problem.
  • Natural fibers vary. Linen and cotton are less consistent than synthetics. If the application is commercial, consider a blend.
  • Verify standards. AATCC methods and ASTM references get updated. This checklist was accurate as of Q1 2025; confirm current versions with your supplier before locking specs.

At Bossa, we review every deliverable against a written standard. It's not the most exciting part of the process, but it's what keeps a $22,000 redo from happening. Consistent specs are the difference between a reliable fabric order and a surprise. That's a trade-off worth taking.
